Licensing, Insurance & Fair Contracts
Florida requires every pool technician to hold a current Pool/Spa Contractor license from the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) — this confirms they’ve passed state exams and understand local codes. Many reputable technicians also carry Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification, covering chemical safety and water-balance standards. Ask your provider for proof of both, plus general liability insurance and workers’ compensation — you can verify any company’s license and insurance status directly through the Florida DBPR’s online lookup tool.
A fair service contract states its scope clearly — what’s covered in a regular visit versus billed separately — and allows reasonable-notice cancellation without penalty. Be cautious of any contract that’s vague about extra fees or locks you into a long term with steep exit costs.
